The Salon at Hays-Heighe for Feb. 23rd has been canceled. I will incoroporate their research into the annual Showcase of Student Projects, to be held later in the spring. Check back for more information!

Be sure to stop by on the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays during March, April, and May, from 1-4 p.m., to view the War of 1812 exhibit.

Salon at Hays-Heighe continues

The salon series will continue in the spring!

On February 23rd, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. we will have our first student-led salon, featuring the history and archaeology of the War of 1812 in Maryland. Students from Dr. James Karmel's history class will present their findings on their primary document research.

We will also discuss the upcoming Maryland state archaeological field school, which will take place in Cecil County this spring.

Light refreshments and free to all.

Visitors to the House

Our exhibit opening was a success!

Visitors enjoyed the lecture by Mike Dixon on lesser know stories of the War, including many people associated with the Upper Bay area.

Also joining us were Judge Sample and Miss Kitty Knight - you can see them posing with our exhibit banner.

Missed the opening? We are open Tuesdays 1-3 and Fridays 10-12. We are also starting up our Saturday hours again: 1-4 pm on the second and third Saturdays in March, April, and May.





War of 1812 exhibit coming soon!

War of 1812: Bicentennial Observance Exhibit will open on Wednesday, Feb. 1st. The opening is from 3:00- 6:30 p.m. and will feature at lecture by local historian Mike Dixon at 4:30. Mr. Dixon will speak on the lesser known stories of life in the Upper Bay.

Be sure to stop by before and after the lecture to hear period music, and skits by costumed performers!

The exhibit will showcase the local history as it relates to the War of 1812, as well as daily life in the early Republic period. New displays and updated information will be added throughout the exhibit run, which will close in December 2012. 

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The Civil War is coming to HCC!

The Library at HCC and the Hays-Heighe House are sponsoring a book discussion on the Civil War, part of a grant received from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The books to be discussed are:

*  “March” by Geraldine Brooks
* “Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam” by James McPherson
*  “America’s War: Talking About the Civil War and Emancipation on Their 150th Anniversaries,” edited by Edward L. Ayers.

James Karmel, Ph.D., associate professor of history, will lead the discussion at each session.

Advanced registration and reading of the materials is required! Sign up for either the 12:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. time slots on the following days:

March 1, March 15, March 29, April 19 and May 3.

The discussions will be held at the Hays-Heighe House.

In addition, a tour of Tudor Hall will be available for participants in the discussion series on Thursday, April 12, at 12:30 p.m.
